In 1947, the International Organization for Standardization (ISO), an organisation with wide-ranging recognition, was established in Geneva, Switzerland. What is BIS?

The Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Health & Public Distribution of the Government of India oversees the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS), which is the country's national standards organisation. It was thought desirable in the middle of the 1980s to give ISI's operations a legal character, which aided in the passage of the BIS Act in 1986. In order to assist the efficient use of standardisation and product quality inspection, with special regulatory supervision, ISI has been given the name Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS). The National Standards Body is now known as BIS, and the Act has been updated as the BIS Act 2016. The Bureau of Indian Standards Act of 1986, which went into effect on December 23, 1986, is what gave rise to this. The ex-officio President of the BIS is the minister in charge of the Ministry or Department with BIS administrative authority.

What is BIS Certification?

The “BIS” in BIS Certification stands for Bureau of the Indian Standards, the regional Indian inspection agency that is under the purview of the Indian Ministry of Consumer Safety, Food & Public Distribution. This institution, formerly known as the Indian Quality Institution (ISI), is the largest of all Indian rating organisations and is becoming more and more important in terms of standardising quality levels. It is in charge of several significant Indian industry certifications in this capacity that are referred to as “BIS Certification”.

Is BIS Certification Necessary?

The Indian Department of Electronics and Information Technology (DEIT) published the Required Registration Order 2012, which became operative on April 3, 2013. The BIS approval for electronic equipment is now required for many products before they may be imported, delivered, or sold into India. For the sake of public health and safety, BIS certification or authorization approval is required for both commodities. Such goods cannot be produced or marketed without BIS certification.
